Satellite View, 2018. Video installation 7 minutes, 55 seconds
Worth Ryder Art Gallery, September 27 - October 4, 2018.
Satellite View utilizes Google Earth’s satellite imagery to examine the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Beginning at the most western edge of the border in Tijuana and San Diego, I virtually follow the U.S. - Mexico border east scanning the landscape. The video questions the interpretation of satellite view technology, framed within the context of trying to understand a highly politicized space between two countries. Knowing that the satellite perspective is not naturally a human perspective and cartography has a history of misuse and misrepresentation by those in power, does Google Earth’s satellite technology objectively capture our landscape?
